Does success is the failure or Does failure is the success?
The main problem is the assumption that all students are successful learners in life, but through the history of success and the reality that we are seeing which proves that the failure is the main cause of success.
Let's review historically the failure that made the success
Winston Churchill failed in his 6th grade tests, later on, he defeated in all general elections. Finally, he won and became the prime minister in England when he was 62 years old. His famous words: “Do not give up - never, never, do not despair of trying to succeed in anything, large or small, great respect or a few”.
The famous Psychologist Sigmund Freud did not let the cries against him that launched by audience in a scientific conference to deter him to say his ideas for first time. This allowed him to return to his office and continue writing about his theories in psychology until he became the most important references in psychology, and released several psychological theories.
The opinion of Thomas Edison teacher when he was asked about him, that this student is “very stupid”. This opinion was the cause of his expulsion. Also, he fired from his first two jobs because the lack of his productivity. As an inventor, he continued trying a thousand times before reaching to the electric lamp, and when asked by a journalist one day: How did you fail a thousand times until you reached to electric light (as if he begrudged a thousand times!) replied Edison: the invention of the electric lamp required a thousand steps to reach it.
Albert Einstein didn’t speak until he was four years old, and could not read until he was seven, and his parent’s opinion was that their child is less than his peers, and his teachers describe him that he a slow thinker. In the end his school expelled him, so that the same in the technical Institute refused to accept. Then, Einstein learned reading, writing and some of the math. Later on he became the most famous physics scientist. Until this day, scientists are standing unable to imagine how he came with his theories. All experiments that applied on it confirm his theories. Today, 1000 researches annually publish about his theory of relativity.
Henry Ford failed and bankrupted 5 times in his life, before he invented the production line in his factories.
The basketball team in the secondary school didn’t accept student Michael Jordan because of his modest level, but the latter he continued failure after failure until he realized the success and the fame.
Walt Disney was kicked out the newspaper where he worked because he doesn’t have a wide fiction or promising ideas. Before building his city he bankrupted several times, but he didn’t forgive and continued to achieve his dream of building the largest and the most famous city around the world which was Disney Land.
Bill Gates the richest man in the world, he left Harvard University, and he said about it: “What a waste of time”. He was studying law, but he succeeded in computer programs. Negative picture he painted about the university this and it is one of the oldest and most famous and most scientifically advanced university. Bill earns $ 250 per second, and more than $ 21 million per day which around 8 billion annually.
Many others who have reached their success, and their success and influence was on the global level.
We must focus on individual aspects of each student who has the potential and capabilities, and interested in the creative aspect in our curricula and focus on the talents.
The history has shown us that creativity does not stop or depends on the equations of chemistry or mathematics or language issues, and that we can make lots and too much without need for certificates.
Our success is not engaged with the Supreme certificates, but in our confidence in ourselves and our ambition, and not despair.
Innovators are really excelled through themselves an were not in order to follow the creativity of others.
Finally, I see that the nation needs more leader graduates Instead of the need only for educated graduates.

If at first you don't succeed try again! I completely agree that it is necessary to take a holistic approach and treat students as individuals. If a student is not living up to their full potential their is most likely a reason why. It is important to look at a student's goal and support them in every way possible. A student might be on a particular path with a certain career in mind. On the other hand they may need assistance in finding a direction to pursue. Students learn in different ways which is an important consideration. As Rahman pointed out believing in a person's ability to do great things is so necessary!
ReplyDeleteI love all the examples of people who have overcome failure and gone to accomplish extraordinary feets. Some of my most enjoyable experiences in working with students, is working with those students who at one point or another in their life had to overcome obstacles and failures to get where they are now. These students have tenacity and determination, and can be an inspiration to others around them who are struggling. As student affairs professionals, how do we encourage students who are facing adversity to continue on? And how to be best use our examples of success to inspire them?
